Who’s afraid of The Holy Ghost? Halloween throws up myriad images designed to scare, including ghosts, ghouls, goblins & gremlins. People’s understanding of the word ‘ghost’ has changed significantly over the years, such that it’s no longer helpful to describe the third dimension to God’s personality and identity (Father, Son & Holy Spirit – 3 persons, One God).

Yesterday we had our Alpha Course ‘Holy Spirit Sunday’. Check-out the 3 sessions we covered on YouTube (Who is The Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit do? How can I be filled with The Holy Spirit?).

In The Bible, likened to wind, dynamite & dove, The Holy Spirit is God’s invisible presence and power daily at work sustaining the World & Universe, making all things new, and ultimately bringing about The New Heaven & Earth that Christ’s first coming and (anticipated) second coming promise. Towards such eternal purpose, The Holy Spirit works in and through the lives of people tuned into and open to God’s filling and overflowing. The Holy Spirit shares with us giftings, abilities and harvests of: faith, hope, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control and ultimate significance as God’s beloved daughters & sons, Christ’s sisters & brothers, and players in Team God.

One reasons why The Holy Spirit gets forgotten or ignored, is The Spirit’s self-effacing nature. Holy Spirit is all about pointing us to Jesus, who leads us into Fellowship with Father God, Who pours His Spirit into and through our lives, continuing the cycle of Communion & Community Life to God’s glory.

These 2 Bible verses illustrate The Triune God’s Team-Work we can share in: “For through Jesus we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”(Ephesians 2:18 / NIV) At Jesus’ baptism by John in Jordan River, The Holy Spirit lands on Jesus as a dove and Father God says, “This is my Son in whom I’m delighted, listen to him.”With similar delight God looks upon all who come to Him through Jesus, empowered by The Holy Spirit.

As they say, “It’s better felt than telt!”It’s impossible to get your head around God being One God in 3 persons, and no comparisons come close to describing or explaining The Trinity. Attempts include: 3 leaf clover; the water, ice & steam of H2O water; Transformers that morph into juggernaut, plane & robot; etc. As someone said, “I believe to understand, rather than understand to believe.”The description of God as ‘Trinity’ is a Mystery, full of unfathomable truth & meaning. And, as we heard from people yesterday, when you experience the power of God’s Holy Spirit surging through your body & being, doubts and fears are vaporised and displaced by the sense of peace & purpose derived from knowing that God loves you enough to come through Jesus to live, die, rise and draw you irresistibly into an intimate personal relationship with Creator of The Universe.

Simple answer to the question, “How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?”is ASK!

“Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn’t a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing. You’re at least decent to your own children. So, don’t you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better and give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”(Matthew 7:11-12 / MSG)
