“Yes, there’s no business like snow business…!” There’s always more going on than meets the eye. While in some parts of the UK snow and cold have ground things to a halt, in some parts of Scotland people are still hanging out their washing : – )
While many were shut in their homes, community spirit was strong, bringing the best out in the police, fire brigade, social work, medical staff and neighbours, looking out for the vulnerable and isolated. Many families recycled the snow into great fun, making snow angels, snowmen and crazy stunts, including the Collie dog which entertained viewers with its enthusiastic, agile, steady sledging.
In Irvine we didn’t get much snow, the ‘Beast from the East’ dumping most of its load inland, but the cold iced up the River Irvine for a spell. There’s always more going on than meets the eye. Like human DNA and finger prints, every snow flake is unique. Did you know that, like humans, every snow crystal is the same in the 6 points that stick out from it, everyone a masterpiece!
It is entirely possible to believe that there’s no higher power, artist and designer behind snowflakes and the myriad other natural marvels within our eye and earshot right now. But it requires colossal assumptions and much faith to
believe that there’s no one behind it all. It is reasonable to believe, if there is a creator God, that he / she does not have our best interests at heart, especially if things have gone badly wrong in our life. But, it also requires mega-assumptions and much faith, due to the remarkable love at work around us, which suggests otherwise. Indeed, some of the strongest, most loving, generous, faith-full people I know have endured unbelievable hardship and sorrow.
Simultaneously, snow can seem both bad and good news, depending on your circumstance and attitude towards it. I believe that, underneath the surface of every situation you enter, God is at work to help you work things out for the Best; that you are unique and uniquely loved by God; that in Jesus Christ we find the human face of God, through whom we can enter into and enjoy an intimate, rich and fulfilling relationship.
As with ‘fake snow’, it’s easy to make ‘fake news’ like this doctored photo of snow lying on Egypt’s Giza pyramids. Remarkably, for the first time in a century, in December 2013 snow fell in Cairo, thus this photo was manipulated for effect.
Yes, there’s no business like God’s show business, there’s no business I know, no business like God’s demonstration of his passionate, loving desire and designs for us. The Good News of Jesus is legit’, there’s nothing ‘fake’ about Jesus’ Love. Here’s how God sticks it to us in Jeremiah 29:11,
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
